Things to do in Reading for adults

Wondering what to do in Reading as an adult? You won’t be short of options.

Start with a wander around Reading Abbey Ruins, whose historic remains offer a peaceful escape just moments from the town centre. For something more energetic, Rivermead Leisure Centre is a popular spot for fitness classes, swimming and more.

If you’re craving a little more adventure, check out TeamSport Indoor Go Karting or Escape Hunt Reading, both perfect for a fun day out with friends.

Food and drink play a big role in Reading life. Blue Collar Corner is a go-to for great food and fun vibes, bringing together independent street food traders in a laid-back outdoor setting. It’s also an area that’s changing, with new homes now taking shape just a short walk away at Chatham Heights, making it easier to live near your favourite spots.

For cocktails, Milk Bar is hard to beat – visit between 5pm and 7pm, Monday to Friday for excellent Happy Hour deals.

If you’re living near areas like Caversham or central RG1, riverside pubs and late-opening cafés are always within easy reach. And if you’re a little further out, there’s bound to be plenty of cosy pubs nearby, like The Bull in Theale. It’s the quieter change of pace that draws people to places like Theale, where established neighbourhoods sit close to countryside and everyday amenities – with newer homes at Herons Lake now part of the mix.

Reading is full of simple pleasures for couples to indulge in.

For a relaxed date in nature, take a stroll along the Thames Path from Caversham and enjoy uninterrupted river views and quiet corners to stop and watch the boats drift past. Caversham Court Gardens is also a favourite, boasting manicured lawns and gorgeous views back across the water to the town. It’s an area that’s long been popular for its balance of green spaces and village feel, with new homes now established nearby at Emmer Green Drive, adding to the appeal of living close to the river and countryside.

Curious minds will enjoy the Museum of English Rural Life, with hands-on exhibits and family trails that make learning feel like play. On rainy days, Reading Biscuit Factory is another great option, with a three-screen cinema and coffee shop.
